An Eye Stye is an eye infection that causes a bump on the eyelid caused by a blocked gland. The obstruction occurs if the opening of the gland is obstructed by scar tissue or a foreign element like that of dust or makeup.
Poor hygiene, hormonal changes and stress can also cause Eye Stye. There are a lot of over the counters medicines that can help with the infection but since it is the eye, a very sensitive part of our body, it is recommended to go natural. Below are some home remedies for eye stye:
#1: Lukewarm Compress
Applying a warm compress to the affected eye is an effective home remedy for stye. Just take a clean cloth and soak it in warm water and the press it on the affected eye for 5-10 minutes every couple of hours.
It will help in providing relief from the burning sensation of the eye. The heat from the compress will increase the circulation of the affected area and will eventually help in draining of the pus from the stye.
#2: Milk And Turmeric
Turmeric has anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Thus, drinking turmeric milk can help reduce inflammation of the stye and help in removing infection causing elements from the stye.
Drinking turmeric milk once a day can help in effective reduction of eye stye.
#3: Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is a popular home remedy for eye stye due to its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory properties and its soothing effect on the skin.
Application of aloe Vera on the affected area helps in reducing swelling, inflammation and redness and accelerates the healing process. Aloe Vera gel should be applied on the affected eye a few times daily for 5-6 days.
#4: Castor Oil
Castor oil contains an anti-inflammatory agent in the form ofricin oleic acid. Thus applying castor oil on the bump on the eyelid can heal the infection and reduce any inflammation and swelling. It should be applied twice daily for a few days.
#5: Tea Bags
Green tea has anti-inflammatory properties and helps in draining away the pus from the stye. Its anti-inflammatory properties help in reducing pain and inflammation.
Green tea is also rich in tannic acid which helps in keeping away the infections. A dipped tea bag should be placed on the affected eye for 5-7 minutes every few hours for best results. Dip a green tea bag in warm water for a few minutes.
Rubbing of metals like gold or iron on the affected eye is an effective way to make the eye stye go away. It is a very old home remedy.
Eye is very sensitive and some precautions should always be taken to prevent any infections of the eye:
- Eyes should always be kept clean; one should wash one’s eyes a few times every day to keep the infections at bay.
- One should wash one’s hands thoroughly before touching the eyes.
- Do not share makeup.
- Never squeeze the stye.
These are just a few precautions and home remedies. If the stye does not get better in 6-7 days, a doctor should be consulted.
